Two Greek Cypriots have been arrested as the masterminds of the theft of former Greek Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos's body. Allegedly, the thieves wanted to frame some enemies; but if that is true, they are utterly incompetent.
Alexis Mavromichalis and Yiannos Ioannou
In court, Assistant Chief of Operations at Police Headquarters and Superintendent B Yiannakis Charalambous stated that police suspected "Alexoui" Alexis Mavromichalis and Yiannos Ioannou of 13 crimes; they have denied all of them.
Those crimes included 'illegal entry into a burial plot' during and 'orchestrating the theft' of Papadopoulos's body, as well as conspiring to murder and 'attempting to murder' the Gregoriou brothers with a car bomb (paraphrased by Saoulli, 2010).
Andis Hadjicostis and Elena Skordelli
One of the Gregoriou brothers has been 'charged with the murder' of Dias media boss Andis Hadjicostis (Saoulli, 2010), which was allegedly masterminded by (Dias-owned) Sigma TV chat show presenter Elena Skordelli.
Skordelli and her brother Tasos Krasopoulis have been arrested on 'suspicion of ordering a hitman to murder her boss [Hadjicostis] after he decided to sack her' (Follain, 2010).
Antonis Prokopiou Kitas
Charalambous also stated that rapist and murderer Antonis Prokopiou Kitas had confessed to all 13 crimes (somewhat strangely (considering Kitas is in prison), apparently including the trespass on the grave), but had accused Mavromichalis of being the mastermind of the theft (Saoulli, 2010).
Despite Antonis Kitas's brother, Mamas Kitas, having accused him of being the mastermind, Charalambous apparently believed Antonis Kitas, as he told the court that Mavromichalis 'convinced' imprisoned Kitas to help him, because Kitas could win his release by telling the police the location of Papadopoulos's corpse (cited by Saoulli, 2010).
Motive?
Charalambous also apparently believed (as he uncritically paraphrased) Kitas's claim that Mavromichalis's motive was 'framing other people with whom they had differences' (cited by Saoulli, 2010).
Yet if that was the motive, the crime was incredibly incompetent. The grave robbery was inexplicable; it did not imply any motive, or any "natural" suspects. And the perpetrators did not even plant any evidence to implicate any "framed" suspects.

Greek Cypriot Orthodox archbishops' tombs' desecration
A 34 [43]-year-old Romanian man has been arrested for the desecration of the tombs of Greek Cypriot Orthodox Archbishops Kyrillos II, Kyrillos III and Sofronios III (heard via Andreas Manolis's Reuter blog).
When did it happen and how was it discovered?
An earlier Reuter's (2010a) report had said that the vandalism had been committed '[u]nder cover of darkness and only metres from a police station'.
It has been widely reported that the desecration was discovered after a fire at the cemetery(though no source yet has explicitly associated the fire with the crime); according to Nicosia Division Police Commander Kypros Michaelides, 'the suspect has also admitted to setting [the cemetery fire]' (paraphrased by Hadjicostis, 2010).
(Obviously, this story has been discussed by the community, for example on the (currently voluntary) Greek diaspora media website Greek Reporter (c.f. Papastopolou, 2010).)
What happened?
Kathimerini and Reuter's (2010b) later report agreed that the suspect had admitted removing the tombstones from the graves of Archbishops Kyrillos II, Kyrillos III and Sofronios II.
But Reuter's (2010b) explicitly stated that he had 'denied removing any human remains', as did Cyprus News Report's Adrienne Morley that he had 'denied stealing any ossuaries containing bones'.
And indeed, Cyprus News Report's Sarah Fenwick paraphrased police reports that it was 'most likely' (but unconfirmed) that the Church itself removed Archbishop Sofronios III's ossuary from his grave.
(It was first thought that two ossuaries had been stolen; but it was then learned that the Church had removed the remains.)
Who did it and why?
Kathimerini also said that the suspect 'presented officers with a bag containing human excrement', while Reuter's said that he 'threw [it] at police officers'.In fact, Greek Cypriot police spokesperson Michalis Koutsounotos said that he 'left a bag of human excrement and tried to flee' (paraphrased by the Associated Press's Menelaos Hadjicostis, 2010).
[Contrary to Hadjicostis's paraphrasing, the Cyprus Mail's George Psyllides directly quoted police spokesperson Michalis Katsounotos that the suspect 'hurled a bag with human excrement at the officers before trying to flee'.
Psyllides cited unsourced "reports" that on other occasions, the suspect 'had soiled two Nicosia churches with human excrement'.]
Reuter's (2010a) earlier report claimed that the desecration bore 'some similarity' to the theft of former Greek Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos's corpse; but even when it was believed that the graves had been robbed, there was no similiarity (apart from the simple fact that both acts were grave robberies).
Commander Michaelides tactfully suggested that, '[f]rom what he [the accused] says, it appears he has issues with the Church and holy grounds' (cited by Reuter's, 2010b).
Morley flatly stated that he had 'mental health problems', and that the police already knew him because of his 'obsessive grudge' against the Greek Cypriot Orthodox Church.
The ever sympathetic Archbishop Chrysostomos II called those responsible 'brainless, blasphemous fools' (cited by Hadjicostis, 2010).
So, it was a sad case; but it was not even a crime (as the person who desecrated the graves was mentally ill and had no control over or responsibility for his actions).

Tassos Papadopoulos, ransom, reward / Τάσος Παπαδόπουλος, λύτρα, αμοιβή
Somehow, the case is getting more complicated/convoluted still. Politis exasperatedly concluded that, 'they did not demand a ransom but "a reward", the family says now! A ransom was demanded, full stop' (Kalatzis, Nearchou ki Orfanidou, 2010). But it's not as simple as that.
Κάπως, η ιστορία πολυπλέκεται/περιπλέκεται ακόμα. Ο Πολίτης εξοργισμένος συμπέρανε ότι, '[δ]εν ζήτησαν λύτρα αλλά 'αμοιβή', λέει τώρα η οικογένεια! Ζητήθηκαν λύτρα... τελεία και παύλα' (Καλατζής, Νεάρχου κι Ορφανίδου, 2010). Αλλά δεν είναι τόσο απλό όσο αυτό.
And when I originally translated the story of Tassos Papadopoulos's Grave Robbery for Ransom, ıt challenged me so much that I did not challenge it. But the Papadopoulos family watched its words. The criminal mastermind did not demand a ransom. The poor accomplice demanded a reward.

Yesterday the Indian accomplice stated that he asked for a reward as 'help in order to flee Cyprus, because he feared for his life' (cited by Nikolas Pantopiou, 2010a), and today he clarified that 'he never threatened the Papadopoulos family, just the one thing that he sought was help in order to leave the country. Indeed, as he characteristically explained, "he felt guilty and simply wanted to tell the truth"' (cited by Nikolas Pantopiou, 2010b).

As I mentioned in my report of the Papadopoulos Grave Robbery: Three Arrested, it was saidthat the body was reburied three months ago, but that the soil was recently dug, and that the opening of the grave was the work of four people, but that two people did it.

So, the Papadopoulos family was right to say that there had been no ransom claim, and there are other critical inconsistencies in the police/state story.

Louka said that '[t]he important thing for people to know is that the motives were financial'. But apart from continuing to confuse the mastermind's plan with the accomplice's plan to escape the mastermind, he also continued to demonstrate an overwhelming desire to calm public opinion, which may not only not help, but actually hinder, the prosecution of the case.

With the mastermind Antonis Prokopiou Kitas's accomplice brother Mamas Kitas, the Indian accomplice Sabrjit Singh did rebury Papadopoulos's corpse immediately, but so shallowly that 'roughly a month ago', they 'cover[ed] the remains with more soil' (Charalambous, 2010), which confused the forensic archaeological evidence.
Με τον συνένοχο αέλφο του εγκεφάλου Αντώνη Προκοπίου Κίτα, τον Μάμα Προκοπίου Κίτα, ο Ινδός συνένοχος Σαμπρτζιτ Σινγκ ξανά ενταφιάστηκε την σορό του Παπαδόπουλου αμέσως, αλλά τόσο ρηχά που 'πριν έναν μήνα περίπου', αυτοί 'κάλυψαν τα κατάλοιπα με περισσότερο χώμα' (Charalambous, 2010), το όποιο μπέρδεψε τις εγκληματολογικές αρχαιολογικές μαρτυρίες.
Hilariously, police spokesperson Michalis Katsounotos 'insisted' that the arrests were not based upon the Papadopoulos family's tip-off, but the police's 'intense investigation'. Allegedly, the police's arrests simply happened to coincide with the family's tip-off (Charalambous, 2010).
Ξεκαρδιστικά, ο αστυνομικός εκπρόσωπος ο Μιχάλης Κατσουνωτός 'επίμενε' ότι οι συλλήψεις δεν στηρίστηκαν στη νύξη της οικογένειας του Παπαδόπουλου, μα στη 'έντονη διερεύνηση' της αστυνομίας (Charalambous, 2010).
The motive of the crime, the plastering of the crime scene with lime, and the criminals' access to a military ambulance have not been explained.

Hilariously, police spokesperson Michalis Katsounotos 'insisted' that the arrests were not based upon the Papadopoulos family's tip-off, but the police's 'intense investigation'. Allegedly, the police's arrests simply happened to coincide with the family's tip-off (Charalambous, 2010).

Politis has reported that the robbery of former Greek Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos's grave was for a ransom. (Ο Πολίτης σύληση του τάφου του τέως Ελληνοκύπριου Πρόεδρου Τάσου Παπαδόπουλου ήταν για μια λύτρα.)
As Manolis Kalatzis, Giannis Nearchou and Sofi Orfanidou (2010) said,
I made the best guesses possible with the best evidence available, but I was wrong. It was a bizarre crime, the Papadopoulos spokespersons' unfounded statements about unfounded statements are inexplicable, and there are still inconsistencies in the revealed evidence, but they do not justify questioning the basis of the ransom story.
